Engineers
Engineers at the Commission experience many opportunities to grow, learn, and excel in a constantly changing environment. They are presented with many meaningful and intellectually stimulating challenges. With workloads that span both the electric and natural gas industries, engineers can utilize their technical education as a springboard for future success. Many engineers have the opportunity to travel across the U.S. for on-site visits to conduct on-site inspections of the nation’s largest energy facilities.
Civil Engineers
Civil engineers conduct on-site inspections and prepares engineering studies to determine the stability of over 2000 hydroelectric dams, powerhouses, and other project structures that support the nations renewable energy supply. They also provide engineering analysis relating to these studies for inclusion in environmental impact statements and assessments, and dam safety reports.
Chemical Engineers
Chemical engineers are on the forefront of technology to utilize Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) systems that transport and transfer a vital source of clean burning fuel for our nation’s energy needs. During field inspections of natural gas pipelines before, during and after construction engineers interact with other State and Federal agencies concerning safety and environmental issues.
Electrical Engineers
Electrical engineers review complex issues of energy markets to ensure fair and reasonable energy transmission rates and ensure that power transmission is efficient and reliable. They are often called upon as an expert witness in electric cases at the Commission.
Environmental Engineers
Environmental engineers contribute to renewable energy sources by reviewing the environmental impact of proposed hydroelectric and natural gas projects. They apply their knowledge by studying aspects of a project’s environmental impacts, determining the scope of the problem, and proposing recommendations to protect the environment.
Petroleum Engineers
Petroleum engineers evaluate reports of exploration and development of oil and natural gas fields. They also evaluate reports on the production, transportation and storage of petroleum and natural gas.
FERC needs professionals and students with the following qualifications:
- Degree in Engineering from an accredited university
- Analytical ability and integrity
- Excellent communication skills
