FOREST SERVICE NAMES NEW ASSOCIATE DEPUTY CHIEF FOR PROGRAMS AND LEGISLATION
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2002 -- U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service
Chief Dale Bosworth today announced the appointment of Susan Yonts-Shepard
as associate deputy chief for Programs and Legislation. That staff area includes
legislative affairs, policy analysis, strategic planning and resource assessment,
the controlled correspondence unit, and the office of communication. Yonts-Shepard
is currently deputy director for Strategic Planning and Resource Assessment.
“Programs and Legislation is a critical staff area for the Forest Service,”
said Bosworth. “Susan’s knowledge of the people and issues affecting
the agency uniquely qualify her for this position.”
During 27 years with the agency, Yonts-Shepard has served in a broad range of assignments. Her Forest Service career began with public affairs positions in Washington and on the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. She also worked in the Washington Office in Land Management Planning, Legislative Affairs, and as program manager for National Appeals and Litigation.
Yonts-Shepard has also been a member of several the agency’s national working groups, including the Columbia River Basin Team and the Northern Spotted Owl Team. Most recently, she has been on special assignment as agency representative to the executive office of the President, Council on Environmental Quality.
“All of my experience has been at those points where natural resource policy connects with people,” Yonts-Shepard said. “That’s where the Program and Legislation staff operates. I appreciate the chance for additional responsibilities on this team.”
Yonts-Shepard is a graduate of the senior executive fellow program at the
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She holds bachelor of
arts degrees in history and political science from Transylvania University.
Yonts-Shepard, a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., will report to her new duties
on Aug. 25.
