MALONEY NAMED AS DIRECTOR, NORTHEASTERN AREA, STATE AND PRIVATE FORESTRY, FOREST SERVICE

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Kathryn P. Maloney has been named as director of the Northeastern Area, State and Private Forestry, a unit of the U. S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Maloney replaces Michael Rains who is now the deputy chief for the State and Private Forestry program of the Forest Service. Maloney will assume the responsibilities of her new position early in 2001.

“I’m looking forward to working with state and private forestry programs in the Northeastern Area, and delighted to be returning to my home state of Pennsylvania,” Maloney said.

Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck said, “With her breadth of experience in both staff and management positions, I look forward to working with Kathryn in her new position.”

Most recently, Maloney served as director for a staff in the Forest Service’s Washington, D.C., office responsible for developing the agency’s national strategic plan required by the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA) as well as nationwide resource assessments required by the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA). She has also served in several temporary positions as a manager or line officer.

Maloney has worked on the Forest Service minerals and geology staff as an economist, and for the Department of Commerce; Freeport Minerals Company in New York City and Washington, D.C.; and as a legislative assistant for international trade for Senator Domenici (New Mexico). Maloney also served as a member of the Secretary of Agriculture’s Advisory Committee for Employees with Disabilities and as a member of the USDA Strategic Planning Team.

A native of Brooklyn, Pa., Maloney received a bachelor’s degree in mineral economics from Pennsylvania State University, and a master’s degree in business administration from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she graduated with honors. She is a member of the USDA Senior Executive Service, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (formerly AIME), and a member of the Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association.
