MANGOLD SELECTED AS DIRECTOR OF FOREST HEALTH PROTECTION

WASHINGTON, July 19, 2000 -- Dr. Robert D. Mangold today was named Director of Forest Health Protection by USDA Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck. Mangold replaces Dr. Ann Bartuska who recently became the Director of Forest Management in the Washington Office. Mangold served as the Acting Deputy Director of the Forest Health Protection staff in State and Private Forestry for the past year and a half. At the same time, he served as the National Forest Health Monitoring Program Manager, working in the Washington Office, but attached to the Southern Research Station in Asheville, N.C.

“Rob brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his position,” Dombeck said. “He has already demonstrated his skills in this area while serving as the acting deputy director. I look forward to working with him and sharing the agency’s future goals and challenges.”

Mangold began his career with the Forest Service in 1988 on the Umpqua National Forest in Oregon where he worked as a geneticist at the Dorena Tree Improvement Center. He has private industry experience, working for Crown Zellerbach Corporation as a tree breeder. Rob also worked on the cooperative forestry staff in Washington as the national nurseries and tree improvement manager.

“I am very pleased and honored to be named director of forest health protection,” said Mangold.. “I look forward to working with our partners in pursuing an aggressive program in forest health,” said Mangold.

Mangold has a doctorate in forest genetics from Oregon State University, a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire.

Mangold, his wife Joan, and their two sons, Gabe, 12, and Eli, 10 live in the Washington, D.C. area.
