Yachats, OR – The third and final Tidepool Discovery Days of the summer will be offered from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, and Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area three miles south of Yachats.

Cape Perpetua Visitor Center staff invites the public to take advantage of some of the lowest tides in August to explore its protected marine garden. Naturalists will be stationed throughout the tidepools to help visitors explore and to answer questions.

“It’s our final Tidepool Discovery Days of the summer, and it’s always our most productive,” said Paul Meznarich, manager of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.

In addition to sea stars, sea urchins and sea anemones, naturalists will be on the lookout for a perennial favorite: the sunflower star, which usually makes an appearance in August to the tidepools at Cape Perpetua. Sunflower stars can have 12 to 24 arms, and it prefers the sandy habitat of the subtidal zone.

The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily. For more information, please call Visitor Center staff at 541-547-3289 or visit us on the web at www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw.
