Siuslaw National Forest (541) 750-7000 TTY for hearing & speech impaired: |
Siuslaw National Forest Enacts Fire RestrictionsContacts: July 18, 2008 Corvallis, OR – Due to increasing temperatures along the Oregon Coast and throughout the West, the Siuslaw National Forest will be implementing special fire regulations beginning Monday, July 21, 2008. Grasses and light fuels throughout the Forest continue to dry out making them highly flammable according to Carl West, Forest Fire Management Officer. “ Historically, the majority of fires started on the Siuslaw National Forest are human caused,” said West. “For this reason a fire regulation order has been signed by the Forest Supervisor.” (See attached order #12-2008-00-05). The order prohibits building a fire or campfire, including charcoal fires, except in certain developed campgrounds (see attached Exhibit A), smoking except in vehicles or developed recreation sites, and restricts vehicles to Forest roads. People maintaining a pressurized liquid gas stove or fire, or candles are exempt from this order. These fire restrictions take place on all Siuslaw National Forest lands east of Highway 101. Off-highway vehicle operations are still allowed under this order on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Sand Lake Recreation Area on the Hebo Ranger District. In addition to the special fire restrictions, the Forest will be going to an Industrial Precaution Level II. In addition to requirements under Level I, the following may operate only between the hours of 8 PM and 1 PM local time:
Please be extra careful when visiting or traveling throughout the Forest. If you have any questions concerning these orders, or to learn more about the fire situation in your area, contact your local Forest Service office or visit our web site at www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw.
