Corvallis, OR – 100 years ago this July 1, the Siuslaw National Forest was established through Executive Order by President Theodore Roosevelt. To commemorate the event employees, retirees, volunteers and their families will gather to celebrate the centennial.

“This is a great opportunity to get together everyone that has worked so hard to make the Siuslaw National Forest what it is today.” said Forest Supervisor Barnie Gyant. “As the 20th Forest Supervisor on the Siuslaw, I am extremely pleased and proud to be on board to oversee the Centennial Celebration.”

As a result of the celebration, Forest offices will be closed, or be lightly staffed on Tuesday, July 1. The closed offices include:

  • Hebo Ranger District
  • Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
    • Waldport office
    • Florence office
    • Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center

The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open, as well as the reception area at the Supervisor’s office in Corvallis.

The Executive Order that established the Siuslaw National Forest was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 30, 1908. The Forest officially came into existence the following day, July 1. The order combined the Tillamook National Forest and portions of the Umpqua National Forest to form the Siuslaw National Forest.
