2008 Grants

On May 29, 2008, the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at NIH announced 14 new Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA)external link, opens in new window. The goal of the CTSA program is to support 60 sites at a total annual cost of $500 million by FY 2012.

Funding support for the CTSAs is provided by the NIH Common Fundexternal link, opens in new window and NCRR. The annual Congressional appropriation process determines the amount of funds available for the CTSA program, and the amount of funds available differs each fiscal year. Subsequently, funding may be reprogrammed to the CTSA program in a given fiscal year as NCRR ends some of its clinical research initiatives, and funds are shifted between the Common Fund initiatives for programmatic reasons.

The annual cost of a CTSA ranges between $4 million to $23 million, depending on each sites previous funding for NIH clinical research resources. Consequently, the number of CTSAs funded within each annual budget depends not only on the results of the formal peer review process and the total annual budget, including reprogrammed funds, but also the size of the awards.
