How do I report fires or other problems?
Emergencies should be reported by dialing 911. The Modoc National Forest
can be reached by calling 530-233-5811 ask the operator for law enforcement,
or emergency operations center.
Can I reserve a campsite?
The Modoc National Forest does not have any campsites or campgrounds in
the reservation system, all campsites are on a first come first serve
basis.
Can I camp in areas outside developed campgrounds?
Yes, You may camp outside of developed campgrounds in most parts of the
Forest, at no cost. Potable water, toilets, and other amenities are not
generally available. If you choose to camp outside developed areas, be
sure to bring adequate water or be prepared to purify spring water before
drinking. Water on the Modoc National Forest may be contaminated with
Giardia or other microorganisms. Also be sure you have a Campfire Permit
if you plan to build a fire.
Where can I ride an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) or Over-Snow Vehicle
(OSV)?
OHV recreation is just one of the many uses allowed on National Forest
lands. OHV travel is not restricted on most of the Modoc National Forest.
Many routes are open and accessible to those who enjoy recreating on OHVs.
It is your responsibility to know and abide by regulations relating to
motor vehicle travel. State law requires registration of all motor vehicles
before being operated on public lands. You must have either a current
Green Sticker or Highway license, both issued by the State Department
of Motor Vehicles. If highway licensed, the vehicle must meet all standards
for operating on a public highway. Many areas are open and accessible
to those who enjoy recreating on ATVs and OSV's during the winter months.
Motorized over-snow travel is prohibited in some areas. Federal law (36
CFR 261.16(a)) prohibits operation of any mechanical or motorized equipment
within the boundaries of a Wilderness.

How do I get a campfire permit?
You must obtain a campfire permit in person from a Forest Service office.
Campfire permits are also available from many California Department of
Forestry or Bureau of Land Management Offices.
Do I need a permit to enter the South Warner Wilderness Area?
You do not need a permit to enter or camp in the South Warner Wilderness
Area. If you plan on having a fire or utilizing a portable stove you need
to have a campfire permit.
