Campfire Permits

Picture of campfire permit.To use a stove, lantern, or campfire outside a developed campground or recreation area, you must have a campfire permit. The permit is your agreement to follow the regulations in effect at any time.

Image of Smokey and cubs putting out a campfire.Your California campfire permit is valid from the date issued until the end of the calendar year on the Modoc National Forest. A permit is available free-of-charge from any Forest Service, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Bureau of Land Management Office.

A California campfire permit is required for a fire outside a developed campground or recreation area.

Remember to follow the regulations found on your campfire permit. Failure to do so could result in suppression costs being charged to you should your campfire escape.

  • Clear flammable material away from the fire to a minimum of 5 feet in all directions.
  • Have a shovel and water next to your fire.
  • Have a responsible person in attendance at all times.·
  • Put out your campfire before you leave: DROWN it with water, STIR it and FEEL it to make sure it is “DEAD OUT”

South Warner Wilderness Area

In the South Warner Wilderness you must always have a campfire permit to use a backpack stove or build a fire.
