NOAA’S A.R. RAVISHANKARA WINS PRESIDENTIAL RANK AWARD

Akkihebbal R. Ravishankara, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration senior scientist working at NOAA’s Aeronomy Laboratory in Boulder, Colo., has received the Presidential Rank Award for exceptional contributions to understanding atmospheric chemistry. The award is given to a select group of senior federal executives who have provided exceptional service to the American people.

Ravishankara was cited for his work identifying and answering key scientific questions about atmospheric chemistry that underlie three major environmental issues; ozone layer depletion, climate change, and air quality at the Earth’s surface.

“NOAA is proud to have Ravishankara recognized for his outstanding work,” said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “Ravishankara’s work which is paving the way for more effective decision-making regarding climate and air quality issues supports both NOAA and the nation.”

Ravishankara has been at NOAA’s Aeronomy Laboratory since 1985. He has received numerous awards including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award and the Department of Commerce Silver Medal.
