These conversations, released on October 16, 1997, comprise the first of two Cabinet Room releases. This segment consists of all conversations recorded in the Cabinet Room, excluding restricted segments.

Release History

During the first review of the Cabinet Room tapes, approximately 78 hours of segments of conversations were withdrawn for national security or privacy reasons under the provisions of the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974 (PRMPA) and Executive Order (EO) 12356.  [See Also:  Why Taped Conversations are Withdrawn]

Withdrawn portions were reviewed, and some were subsequently released as the second declassified Cabinet Room release.  [See Also:  Declassified Segments]

Segments that were declassified are identified on the Cabinet Room Tape Subject Logs and will refer researchers to the corresponding declassified segments.
