Conference Overview

Our natural resources are under increasing pressure from abiotic factors such as climate change and the need to manage for varied, often conflicting, multiple uses. Furthermore, resource issues, such as water quantity and water quality that historically were considered mainly  Western problems are prompting reconsideration of water management issues on a national scale. Consequently, natural resource planners, managers, and policy makers are also under increasing pressure to justify their decisions to a broader range of stakeholders. Conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems are high priorities throughout the Nation and require collaboration among multiple disciplines. Practitioners often have limited opportunities to interact with colleagues in interdisciplinary venues to discuss issues and challenges relevant to ecosystem restoration. To enhance your ability to successfully meet the myriad restoration challenges, we invite you to participate in the interdisciplinary 3rd National Conference on Ecosystem Restoration. This is your opportunity to expand your knowledge, share your experience, and network with colleagues from across various disciplines such as engineering, science, economics and the social sciences. This conference offers several ways to broaden your knowledge and understanding: traditional technical sessions (platform and poster); presentations by national leaders; interactive panel discussions; training workshops; and scheduled times to “meet and greet” our many diverse exhibitors and partners. The West Coast location spotlights ecosystem restoration challenges and successes of the region as well as building on the knowledge base from previous NCERs. Large scale ecosystem restorations including the Chesapeake Bay, Coastal Louisiana, Everglades, Great Lakes, Lower Colorado, Columbia, Snake, Mississippi and Missouri River Basins, Puget Sound, and San Francisco Bay and Delta will be highlighted in interactive panel discussions; small scale restorations are equally important and valuable components of traditional technical sessions. National and international perspectives on coastal, near-shore, riverine, and upland habitats, and urban ecosystem restoration will be presented. The nexus between societal expectations and economics will be explored with sessions on restoration economics and quantification of ecosystem services. The role of adaptive management and how the presence of endangered or listed species influences or changes restoration planning, processes and management actions will be investigated. This is an excellent opportunity for you to increase your “toolbox” with cutting edge science, modeling, and data management tools. The conference also addresses the constraints and limitations imposed by contaminants, and climate change.

This conference provides a forum to discuss pressing challenges to restoration planning and implementation such as:

  • Effective partnering to integrate planning, policy, science and engineering to provide effective, relevant and timely solutions

  • Combining state-of-the-art approaches, technology, tools and information to solve problems and achieve environmental sustainability

  • Ensuring the continuity and completion of large-scale, multiple year projects that involve multiple government agencies, non-government organizations, tribal governments and other partners

  • Setting goals and objectives

  • Defining success.
