Section 508 Awareness Training -1:00 - 3:00 pm EST in VACO Room C7

January 26, 2009, Washington, DC

The Section 508 Accessibility Testing and Training Center would like to invite you to “Section 508 Awareness Training” located in VACO Room C7A from 1:00-3:00 pm EST. VANTS, Live Meeting and Transcript are available. In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. ‘794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others. For more information, contact Fred Royer at Fred.Royer@va.gov.

GSA 508 Training (Section 508 - Under Training)

  • The 508 Universe serves as a central hub for GSA's section 508 training and information resources.  In it you can access each of the topic-specific courses that address 508 implementation as well as explore Web links and a glossary of 508-related terms.  When you first visit the site, you will be asked to set up a username and password.  No additional information is required in the registration process; you are not asked for any identifying or personal data.  The username is used to track where you are in the courses so that should you choose to leave a course before finishing it, you can choose to "resume" when you next enter the Universe. This eliminates any possible security risk of using cookies, and no files are written to your computer.
  • If this is your first time visiting our training area, you will need to REGISTER to enter the 508 Universe and access the available courses listed below.
  • If you have previously registered for the 508 Universe training, you will not need to do so again.  Simply enter your assigned username and password in the "User Login" area on the right, and select 508 Universe to enter the Section 508 Universe.  Please review the 508 User Help Guidance for additional information regarding the Universe. - Section 508 Universe User Guidance
  • The Section 508 Awareness CD is now available online.  This CD contains general section 508 information for all employees, as well as a self-test and copies of the statute, accessibility standards, and relevant sections of the FAR.

 Access Board Training

The Access Board provides training on its accessibility guidelines and standards to various organizations and groups across the country.  Most training sessions focus on the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) which covers the built environment and transportation vehicles.  ADAAG training also addresses new or upcoming sections, such as those covering children's environments, play areas, state and local government facilities, and recreation facilities.  In addition to ADAAG, training is available on design requirements for Federal facilities, telecommunications equipment, and electronic and information technology.

For more information or request training from the Board, contact training coordinator by email Peggy Greenwell or call (202) 272-0017 (voice) or (202) 272-0082 (TTY).
