What Is The Toolkit?

This toolkit is intended as a starting point for new users of VA data.

  • An introduction to VA data in general describes the many types of data sources within the Veterans Health Administration of particular relevance to VA research.
  • Detailed information here focuses on the data most frequently used by VA researchers. These are the basic inpatient and outpatient data from VHA facilities that are stored at the Austin Information Technology Center (AITC formerly: CFD; formerly: AAC) and available as SAS datasets. (SAS is a registered trademark of the SAS Institute, Inc.) VIReC produces Research User Guides as tools for users of these datasets.
