PROMISE

CHERP investigator David Casarett, MD, MA and his team work on the VA-wide palliative care improvement initiative, Performance Reporting and Outcomes Measurement to Improve the Standard care at End-of-life (PROMISE). The  PROMISE project is a multi-site evaluation program that in FY 09 involves 12 VISNs and aims to be VA-wide (21 VISNs) in FY 2010.  PROMISE consists of quality data obtained through veteran chart review and family interviews that inquire about  experience and satisfaction with VA health care received by a loved one at the end of his or her life. The information from the charts and the surveys is tabulated on an ongoing basis and presented to participants and VISN and other leadership quarterly.  The plan is for the family interview instrument to be implemented as a VA performance measure starting in FY10.
