About Us: Centennial
The Forest Service is turning 100!
The USDA Forest Service will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 1,
2005. On this date 100 years ago, the Forest Service was created as an
agency with a unique mission: to sustain healthy, diverse, and productive
forests and grasslands for present and future generations. The commemoration
will be a combination of nationally promoted “signature events” and
locally sponsored opportunities. More information. more >>
We have posted information specific to the history of the Forest Service
in the Southwestern Region in our History section.
This section contains historic photos, information on the first Smokey Bear,
initial forest reserves, a listing of Regional Foresters and the publication, "A
Timeless Heritage."

CHAR MILLER AUDIO
This
audio recording reflects on the life and activism of Gifford
Pinchot, founding chief of the Forest Service. You will
discover as you listen to Char Miller’s narration
that Pinchot was one of the most compelling and charismatic
figures of his time. He was at the forefront of the conservation
movement in America and not only created the profession
of forestry but also the National Forests.
Char Miller is professor of history and director of urban
studies at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He
is a leading authority on Forest Service history. Char’s
narration is based on his book, Gifford Pinchot and
the Making of Modern Environmentalism.
