About Us: Centennial

The Forest Service is turning 100!

The USDA Forest Service will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 1, 2005. On this date 100 years ago, the Forest Service was created as an agency with a unique mission: to sustain healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands for present and future generations. The commemoration will be a combination of nationally promoted “signature events” and locally sponsored opportunities. More information. more >>

We have posted information specific to the history of the Forest Service in the Southwestern Region in our History section. This section contains historic photos, information on the first Smokey Bear, initial forest reserves, a listing of Regional Foresters and the publication, "A Timeless Heritage."

GREATEST GOOD BOOKS AND DVD
The Greatest Good DVD will be released in May. This is a three-disc set with hours of “extras” including additional interviews, archival materials, mini-documentaries and behind-the-scenes material. A companion book “The Forest Service and the Greatest Good” by James Lewis will be available at the same time. This book, published by the Forest History Society, covers many aspects of Forest Service history that we were not able to include in the film.

Currently Available:

  • “The Greatest Good: 100 Years of Forestry in America” (2nd Edition)—this centennial version by Char Miller and Rebecca Staebler includes many wonderful images and a fascinating timeline of conservation history. This is a publication of the Society of American Foresters. Order forms are available at: www.foresthistory.org/Publications/new.html.
  • The CD of original music from the film. It's great listening and brings you right back to what you remember about the film.
