Land Cover

About the Data

Land cover maps document how much of a region is covered by forests, wetlands, impervious surfaces, agriculture, and other land and water types.  By comparing land cover maps over a period of time, users can also document land use trends and changes. The data is derived from remotely sensed imagery, which is the most efficient means of getting land cover data for a large region.

The Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) has developed a baseline of land cover, or C-CAP data, for the nation’s coastal zone.

Data Standards

NOAA works with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other federal programs to produce a consistent, comprehensive land cover database for the nation.  Data products are produced through automated, repeatable procedures and utilize standard data sources.
