July cases are up at the CNS Case Sharing Project

The July cases (2008e and 2008f) for the Child Neurology Society's Case Sharing Project are now up at http://www.childneurologysociety.org/education/casestudies/ and the diagnosis for the June case (2008d) is now being revealed to those who are not program directors.

There are several firsts about the July cases, which will enhance this initiative:

  • First cases to include radiographic images
  • First cases contributed by trainees working with their mentors
  • First time we've posted two cases in a month

As you will see, the two July cases go well together. We are hoping to move towards posting two cases a month on a regular basis. This will require our accumulating additional cases in reserve or getting commitments from some training programs to contribute cases regularly. If you are willing to participate we ask that you designate individuals who can contribute cases from those they have presented in your training programs, either as a single case, or multiple cases if your program can contribute regularly. Please see http://www.childneurologysociety.org/education/casestudies/submit for details of how to submit cases.

NIH Researchers Find That Rett Syndrome Gene is Full of Surprises
June 18, 2008

From the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS):

A study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has transformed scientists' understanding of Rett syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes autistic behavior and other disabling symptoms. Until now, scientists thought that the gene behind Rett syndrome was an "off" switch, or repressor, for other genes. But the new study, published today in Science*, shows that it is an "on" switch for a startlingly large number of genes.

Rett syndrome is caused by a deficiency of the MECP2 gene. It occurs almost exclusively in girls, robbing them of language, cognitive and fine motor skills around the time they are learning to walk. Having extra copies of MECP2 can also cause Rett-like symptoms.

By manipulating the number of copies of the MECP2 gene in mice, the authors of the new study found that it controls thousands of other genes, suppressing some, but activating most. The research was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), both part of NIH.

"This study simultaneously upends prevailing ideas about the disease process in MECP2-related disorders, and hints at new therapeutic strategies," says NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D

[CNS member, Huda Zoghbi, MD, is the lead author of this study. Dr. Zoghbi’s talk, “Rett syndrome and MECP2 disorders connect clinical and basic research” keynoted the 2007 CNS Annual Meeting Presidential Symposium in Quebec City]

CNS WINTER 2007- LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT --
AVAILABLE ON WEBSITE NOW
February 13, 2008

Being new to the job of CNS president, I am still trying to learn the basic requirements, as well as the many diverse duties and responsibilities attached to the position. The first requirement must surely be humility, something anyone standing in my position and looking back over the long list of predecessors could manage easily enough. The second requirement, it strikes me, would be a sense of gratitude. That too is easy, beginning with the thanks I owe you, the membership, for honoring me with your trust and confidence, and continuing with a word of thanks both from myself and on behalf of the entire CNS to my immediate predecessor, Ann Tilton. ...more
