Volcano Sites
- The Oldoinyo Lengai Website
- Prepared and maintained by Celia Nyamweru, a longtime contributor to the GVN Bulletin. Tons of information about this fascinating volcano. Sections are included about its evolution, natrocarbonatite lava, previous eruptions, a recent update, and climbing information.
- Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania: The Mountain of God
- Prepared and maintained by Frederick Belton. Photo galleries and activity descriptions from multiple visits since 1997.
- Lakes Nyos and Monoun, the Killer Lakes of Cameroon: Gas Disasters and Plans for Hazard Mitigation through Degassing
- On 26 August 1986 an enormous volume of carbon dioxide was released from Lake Nyos that killed about 1,700 people. Two years earlier in Lake Monoun there was a smaller release of CO2 that killed 37 people. Two possible explanations for these events were originally proposed, and were centered around a limnologic hypothesis (limnology is the study of lakes and streams) and a volcanic eruption hypothesis. This rare natural disaster is complex, little understood, and difficult to study. Information on this site shows that these events were essentially limnological in origin, and that volcanic activity at the time of the events was absent.
