Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS)
Block Grant
The health needs of communities are diverse, complex, and constantly
changing. To address these needs, the
Preventive Health
and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant provides funding to 50
states, the District of Columbia, two American Indian tribes, and 8
U.S. territories to address their public health needs and challenges
in innovative and locally defined ways. The PHHS Block Grant
provides a source of flexible funding and allows grantees to direct
resources to fill funding gaps in programs that respond to emerging
health issues, as well as deal with leading causes of death and
disability.
Public Health at Work: Messages Across America (
PDF–3.7Mb)
demonstrates PHHS Block Grant funds in action. This document
provides a glimpse of how all 50 states, the District of Columbia,
the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Western Pacific Islands use
PHHS Block Grant funds to address state and local public health
needs. The state, territory, and tribal success stories found in
this publication illustrate the wide range of activities for which
PHHS Block Grant funds are used to improve health, save lives, and
leverage or secure health care dollars.
