USDA Forest Service Releases
Invasive Plant EIS-Record of Decision – Nov 2005
PORTLAND,
Nov. 9, 2005 – With
about 420,000 acres of national forests and grasslands in the Pacific
Northwest infested to some degree by 95 species of invasive,
non-native plants, the USDA Forest Service has developed a systematic,
integrated way to prevent future infestations, manage existing problems, and
restore affected sites. Regional
Forester Linda Goodman signed a Record of Decision (ROD) that will guide the
invasive plant management program for the national forests and national
grassland in Oregon and Washington.
A legal notice will be published next
week opening a 45-day appeal period.

The Pacific Northwest Region has
released an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) addressing the growing
problems caused by invasive plants in National Forests. When completed, this
EIS will amend all Forest Plans to improve invasive plant prevention and
provide new tools to tackle more than 420,000 acres infested with yellow star
thistle, leafy spurge, and Japanese knotweed.

Invasive Plant Draft EIS – seeks comments
PORTLAND, August 27, 2004 - The Pacific Northwest Region
has released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) addressing the
growing problems caused by invasive plants in National Forests. When completed,
this EIS will amend all Forest Plans to improve invasive plant prevention and
provide new tools to tackle more than 420,000 acres infested with yellow star
thistle, leafy spurge, and Japanese knotweed. Public comments on the DEIS are
requested by November 24, 2004, after which they will be analyzed, leading to a
Final EIS and Record of Decision to be issued next Spring.

NATIONAL STRATEGY AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR INVASIVE SPECIES
PRINEVILLE, October 28, 2004 - Undersecretary Mark Rey
attended the rollout of the "National Strategy and Implementation Plan for
Invasive Species". On the same
occasion, Rey announced that the Western Wildland
Environmental Threat Assessment Center, a component of HFRA's
Early Warning System located in Prineville, has been doing business on invasives. A similar center in the East will be located in
Asheville, North Carolina.
