Abstract: | (CIT): Muscle cells are regulated by large movements of calcium ions and these in turn are controlled by complex systems of membranes. All muscles, from the most primitive to the most evolved organisms share a common set of organelles and proteins that are involved in calcium homeostasis. Calcium for muscle activation is released at specific sites called calcium release units that comprise a large complex of proteins. The architecture of calcium release units is revealed by comparative observations and by the effect of removing key components. The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide. |
