Individual Fellowships for Senior Fellows (F33)

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Senior Fellows (F33) provides up to two years of support for experienced scientists who wish to make major changes in the direction of their research careers or who wish to broaden their scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. These awards are targeted to individuals with at least seven years of research experience beyond the doctorate, and who have progressed to the stage of independent investigator. In most cases, this award is used to support sabbatical experiences. Before submitting an application, an individual must arrange for acceptance by an institution and sponsor who is an active investigator in the area of the proposed research who will directly supervise the candidate’s research during the period of the fellowship. By the time of the award, individuals must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residency. The NIH contribution to the stipend during the fellowship cannot exceed the NRSA stipend provided for individuals with more than seven years of experience.
