Patient Advocate
If you have a problem, ask for help from your health care team on the ward. Issues should first be addressed with the supervisor/manager of that area. Look for “Point of Service” contact posters for pictures of these individuals, ask staff for assistance in reaching them. If you are not satisfied, contact the Patient Representative who is here to help you. The Patient Advocate is located in Buffalo on the first floor, E-Wing, in the Veterans Service Center and can be reached at (716) 862-8752.

In Batavia, the Patient Advocate is located in X-ray, Building 1, first floor, or may be reached at (585) 297-1121.

Veterans Benefits Counselors
VA Regional Office, NY State Division of Veterans Affairs and service organizations are available in Buffalo and Batavia to help you with VA and other veterans’ benefits (compensation, pension, government insurance, education, GI loans, and vocational rehabilitation). As a veteran (women and men) you may have experienced a sexual trauma while on active duty. Since trauma is isolating and leaves you feeling disconnected and different from others, sharing your experiences and feelings with the support of other people can help. Your VA health care team can help you cope with the after affects of a trauma experience and help you to regain your confidence, self-esteem and quality of life. Women Veterans Coordinator
The Women Veterans Program Manager (WVPM) is a health care professional sensitive to the needs of women veterans. Specific concerns related to care, including issues of privacy, safety, and comfort for women in the VA Health Care System should be referred to the WVPM at (716) 862-8675. Minority Veterans Program Coordinator
The Minority Veterans Program Coordinator focuses on the needs of minority veterans. Direct specific concerns about VA programs, benefits and services to the Minority Veterans Program Coordinator in Buffalo at (716) 862-3114. Contact a member of your health care team for assistance.

Visually Impaired Services (VIST)
The Visual Impairment Services Team (VIST) is designed to provide service to visually impaired veterans and their families. The VIST Coordinator is a specialist in the area of vision loss and can help with questions about low vision aids and equipment, vision related benefits for veterans who are legally blind, programs and services that can help veterans cope with their visual impairments. VIST also offers eye exams, medical screening and benefits reviews to visually impaired veterans. If you have questions, or would like to apply for any of these services, please contact the VIST Coordinator located on the first floor, C-Wing, room 106C, or phone (716) 862-8782. In Buffalo, there is also a support group for veterans and their families that meet monthly.

Homeless Veterans Coordinator
The goal of the Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) Program is to end homelessness among veterans through outreach efforts and community partnerships. Veterans are engaged in treatment and rehabilitation programs to enable them to achieve a better quality of life. Social Work Assistance
Social workers are assigned to inpatient units and outpatient clinics in the Medical Center. They are there to help you with any problems affecting your care. Our social workers can provide counseling to help you and your family cope with your illness and lifestyle changes. They also have information about many community agencies and resources that may be of help to you and your family. Tell your health care team if you need to contact your social worker. They are there to help you with any concern and enhance your treatment and maximize recovery.
