American Samoa Soldier Dies in War on Terror
Milo is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mareko and Folola Milo of Malaeimi. The oldest of four children, he was educated in American Samoa and moved to California in 2003 “seeking a better life and opportunities,” said his mother. In 2005, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Irwin in Barstow, California. He was also stationed in Germany until August this year when he was deployed to Iraq, his mother said. Milo was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany. Acting Gov. Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia offered his sympathies to the family of Army Spc Avealalo Milo and said, “Specialist Milo’s bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered as he willingly served America and protected the freedom of the world, while fighting to restore the freedom of another land.” Friends and fellow soldiers are offering their condolences and praises for Milo on various websites remembering soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sgt. 1st Class Jose Delao of Alameda, California, who is Milo’s recruiter, said “he is a great guy and a true American hero.” In an interview with Pacific Magazine, Mrs. Milo said “It’s such a hard and difficult time for us, especially when that bond between a son and parents has suddenly ended.” She added “I am happy and proud that my son was useful in his life, serving a purpose. My dear son -- we are proud of you” Milo survived by his wife Joshlyn (they were married only three months ago),

Washington, D.C. (October
31, 2007) — On his final journey home to Malaeimi,
another fallen hero and brave son of American Samoa will be accompanied by
Congressman Eni Faleomavaenga, family members, and military officials. Army
Spc. Avealalo Milo, 23, died October 4 in Baghdad, Iraq of wounds suffered
when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire, according to the
U.S. Department of Defense.
