Guam Soldier Dies in Action
May 3, 2007 – U.S. Army Private First Class John D. Flores, 21, of Barrigada, Guam, was one of two American soldiers killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, when their unit came under attack from enemy forces. The other casualty was Army Sergeant Felix Gonzalez-Iraheta of Sun Valley, California. Both soldiers were from the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany. PFC Flores, who recently celebrated his first anniversary with his wife, Charlene, also leaves behind an 18-month old daughter, Chloe. “I am deeply saddened to learn that our island has lost another son in Operation Iraqi Freedom,” Guam Delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Madeleine Bordallo, began in a statement to the family and community in Guam. The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs remembers and honors these valiant dead and their surviving families, who offer up the ultimate in sacrifice in the War on Terror. The seven insular areas under OIA jurisdiction, combined, have thousands of sons and daughters who have served or are currently serving in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The death of U.S. Army Private First Class John D. Flores brings the number of deaths in the War on Terror from the U.S. territory of Guam to nine. |
