U.S. Marshal Mark M. Hanohano was appointed on June 4th 2003 by President George W. Bush.

Marshal Hanohano has been a life long resident of the state of Hawaii. Attending St. Louis High School, graduating from the Mid-Pacific Institute and then continuing his education at Hawaii Loa College, Marshal Hanohano began his law enforcement career in 1985 with the Hawaii State Sheriff’s Office. During his tenure with the Hawaii state Sheriff’s, Marshal Hanohano gained experience in prisoner transportation, cellblock, court security, and dignitary protection. The majority of Hanohano’s career, however, was spent working in the felony warrants section, both as a deputy and as a supervisor.

While in the warrants section Marshal Hanohano worked on several high profile cases, such as the Antolin case, the Kim case, and the Domingo case. Hanohano was also involved in the cases of prisoner escapes from Halawa and OCCC. As part of the warrant section Hanohano took part in prisoner transportation throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

Marshal Hanohano moved to a supervisory position in the warrants division and continued to take an active role in the Sheriff’s office. Since the start of his law enforcement career Hanohano took part in the Sheriff’s office Special Operations Group.

With the experience he had gained, in 1999 Hanohano assisted with the transfer of Honolulu International Airport’s law enforcement jurisdiction from the Honolulu Police Department to the State Sheriff. This move brought about a big change for the Sheriff’s Office, as they were now tasked with traffic enforcement. While at the Airport Hanohano had the opportunity to work with federal law enforcement agencies, such as the U.S. Customs office and Immigration and Naturalization.

Since his appointment as the United States Marshal for the District of Hawaii, in 2003, Marshal Hanohano has been working to actively contribute to the law enforcement ohana, by apprehending fugitives, and making communities safer for Hawaii’s kupuna and keiki.

Hanohano’s goal for the Marshals Service has been to promote a cohesive relationship with county, state, and federal agencies with one objective, sincere unity. As a native Hawaiian, Hanohano feels truly blessed and honored to be the U.S. Marshal for the district of Hawaii.

“The public doesn’t care about the shape of the badge or the color of the uniform; they just want to be protected. It is our duty as law enforcement leaders to ensure that our agencies and departments work as one. This concept of unity will result in efficiency and effectiveness. The (U.S. Marshals Service) has an honored history and it is a privilege to be part of that history.”  U.S. Marshal Mark M. Hanohano
