Technology & Innovative Programs
  
Purpose

The team is responsible for providing training, and technical assistance to assure that adults who work in school systems have the knowledge skills, and abilities they need to support students in achieving success. The Department has been increasing the use of technology to facilitate teacher training, and ongoing communication among students and staff.

Key Long-Term Objectives

  • Structure teacher preparation programs and licensure requirements to reflect what prospective and current educators must know and be able todo to insure that all students are provided with opportunities to learn to high standards.
  • Support NDE staff through the establishment of an in-depth and ongoing professional development program.
  • Support the in-service training of local school personnel and others through the establishment of an in-depth and ongoing professional development program.
  • Expand the use of technology in providing training and technical assistance to all school staff.
  • Enhance and expand recruitment and retention of qualified individuals to work in the Nevada Department of Education.
  • Assist LEAs in recruiting and retaining qualified individuals to work in Nevada's schools.
  • Recognize exemplary work within the Nevada Department of Education which contributes to educational excellence for all Nevada students.
  • Recognize exemplary programs and individuals for their contributions to educational excellence for all Nevada students.

Accomplishments and Significant Changes

  • A comprehensive K-12 State Technology Plan has been developed which includes planning from the Governor's Technology Task Force, the Nevada School NetworkTask Force, and the Distance Learning Committee. Activities are also underway to assist districts in developing district-level and school-level technology plans.
  • With funding provided from the FY95 Legislature, the Nevada Department of Education and the University and Community College System of Nevada extended the Nevada School Network (NSN) so that every school in the state of Nevada that has access to a computer, a modem, and an outside telephone line can connect to the network without paying long-distance phone charges, connect time charges, or individual account charges.
  • Training has been conducted throughout the state on integrating technology into the curriculum, with particular emphasis on mathematics and science. A statewide conference on distance learning was conducted with particular emphasis on use of satellite downlinks. A Department of Education web page has been established which provides links to curriculum resources for Nevada educators. The web page also highlights outstanding programs in the state, as well as distinguished educators that can be used as a resource.
