TRANSFER RESOURCE CENTER

With funding from a Title V Cooperative with New Jersey Community University (NJCU), Hudson County Community College Transfer Resource Center (TRC) is committed to providing integrated services and resources to students seeking admission to baccalaureate degree granting institutions. The Transfer Resource Center makes every effort to ensure that students interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree successfully transfer to a four-year program without losing credits and/or duplicating courses. The Transfer Resource Center was established in the fall of 2003 and offers a myriad of services including transfer counseling, transfer workshops, College Information Day, a transfer library, a computer lab and tours to local colleges (NJCU and Rutgers University) schools.

The Transfer Resource Center has enjoyed substantial and even notable progress. The number of students that the Transfer Resource Center has served continues to increase each semester. We have gone from serving 192 students in the Center’s first semester to 877 students (unduplicated count) in the fall of 2005. We continue to track students who attend our workshops and events. We have seen a 35 percent increase in the number of students served from spring 2005 to fall 2005 and a 38 percent increase in the number of student contacts.

The Transfer Resource Center has also seen a healthy growth in the number of workshops offered and the student participation. Workshop titles include, “The ABC’s of Transfer,” “What to Expect When You Transfer to a Four Year College,” “What Do I Do Next?” and “Study Abroad Programming.” In the fall of 2005, 340 students participated in TRC workshops. That is a 102 percent increase in student participation from the previous fall semester (See last sentence in previous paragraph.). The number of students participating in the College Information Day Fair this year was 232.. College Information Day offers our students the opportunity to meet Tri-State New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area four-year college and university representatives, ask questions and collect information from these institutions of higher learning.

This past fall, the Transfer Resource Center held “Instant Decision Days” with five area colleges and universities. Representatives from these institutions came to our Center, interviewed interested students, reviewed their transcripts, and provided them with instant decisions on their applications. There were 86 students who participated this past semester. Each institution waived the application fee, saving our students a total of $2,990. We also organized a campus tour for HCCC Honors Program students at Rutgers University-Newark. The trip was attended by nine students and one faculty member. We look forward to offering more campus visits in spring 2006.

The Transfer Resource Center has worked closely with the Office of the Assistant Academic Dean to revise and update HCCC Dual Admission and Articulation Agreements. We have developed a “working list” of colleges and universities with which we have definitive agreements in writing. We have also developed a publicity piece for the Dual Admissions Program. We currently have 291 students signed up for Dual Admissions. Out of these students, 182 signed up this past semester. In their applications, a total of 466 schools were selected by the 291 students. Students may choose up to seven schools to apply for Dual Admissions.

Hudson County Community College is proud of the opportunities afforded the institution from the Title V award and equally as proud of the amazing strides that the Transfer Resource Center has made.
