David D. Viles was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the 38th United States Marshal for the District of Maine on February 14, 2002, having been recommended for appointment by United States Senator Olympia J. Snowe. David was born in Skowhegan, Maine, in 1955 and was raised in Embden, Maine.

David’s career in law enforcement began in 1977, where he served one year as a deputy sheriff with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. He subsequently served as a patrolman with the Madison (Maine) Police Department until his enlistment with the Maine State Police in 1979. David served 21 years with the Maine State Police, retiring as its Deputy Chief (Lieutenant Colonel) in 1999. He served in several capacities throughout his career, including supervising the Executive Protection Unit. In that capacity, David was responsible for the coordination and planning of several key events, such as New England Governors’ Conferences, New England Governors’ and Canadian Premiers’ Conferences, and several Presidential visits. In addition, he served as the Director of the Internal Affairs Division for several years, which included recruitment and collective bargaining responsibilities. While serving as Deputy Chief, David was assigned as the State of Maine Legislative liaison officer for the Maine State Police and was actively involved with NESPAC (New England State Police Administrative Conference). During his career with the State Police, David received the Colonel’s Award (life savings measures) in 1980, and he was recognized as the Outstanding Sergeant in 1990.

David is currently serving on Director Reyna’s Advisory Committee. He is also actively involved in the Central Maine Law Enforcement Program, the Lewiston Regional Law Enforcement Program, and the Central Maine Community College Advisory Committee for Criminal Justice. Further, David serves on the Maine Criminal Justice Commission, and is a member of the Maine Sheriffs’ Association, the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
