The U.S. transportation network makes possible a
high degree of personal mobility and freight activity.
The data in this section show growth in travel and freight
shipments over time. Factors infl uencing this growth
include, among others: vehicle availability, travel costs,
population, congestion, the economy, and consumer
income.
