Before starting your research, it is helpful to understand how the Nixon Library collections are organized. Use the links below to help you learn more.

How the Materials Are Organized

  • Materials are located in two facilities - one in Maryland and the other in California.

  • The archives at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, principally holds papers from the pre-presidential period, including the vice-presidential era, and from the post-presidency.

  • The Nixon Library in College Park holds the bulk of the presidential papers, including the recordings of presidential conversations (the "White House tapes") and other audiovisual materials.

  • Materials are organized by media type (tapes, video, film, textual, etc.).

  • Since this is an archives, our holdings are maintained in their original order and are not organized by subject the way libraries organize their holdings of books.

Preparing for Research  [See Also:  How to Perform Research at NARA]

  • We advise all researchers to begin their research with published sources in order to be familiar with their topic.

  • Know important dates and names of White House staff members that would have been involved with the topic.

Researching the Materials  [See Also:  Finding Aids Index]

Researchers interested in finding information within the Nixon Presidential Materials should begin by identifying the media and using the Finding Aids specific to each type.

In order to facilitate research, the staff of the Nixon Library has also prepared lists of collections by subject on select topics.
