According to the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act (PRMPA)
and its implementing regulations, all Nixon Presidential Materials,
including Nixon White House Tapes, must be released through a public opening.

This process includes:
- written notifications to the incumbent President,
the Nixon estate, former employees on our registry list
(a list of former Nixon administration staffers who requested to be notified
of materials proposed for public access),
and the publishing of a notice in the Federal Register.

- Once these notifications have been made, those notified have 30 days to inspect or
comment on the materials proposed for opening.
- Once this period has expired, the National Archives publishes a
Press Release providing details about
the materials to be opened to the public.

On the day of the opening, the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff
allows public access to the materials in a specially designated Research Room.
