On July 11, 2007, the National Archives opened the new Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in the facilities formerly occupied by the private Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace.
Under legislation passed in January 2004, the Nixon Presidential Materials, currently housed at the National Archives building in College Park, Maryland, will move to the Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California.
The following is a tentative timeline for the transition of materials to Yorba Linda. Please note that this timeline is subject to change and dependent on many factors, including sufficient funding and completion of the new storage addition.
- Summer 2007 – NARA accepts the Nixon Library as the 12th Presidential Library.
- Summer 2007 – NARA begins transfer of the 30,000 Presidential gifts from the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff in College Park, Maryland.
- 2008-2009 – NARA continues to transfer the Presidential gifts.
Textual and audio-visual materials currently available for research will continue to be available for research in College Park, Maryland, until spring 2010, when they will be moved in increments. In spring 2009 the Nixon Library will post more detailed information on the phases of this move to help scholars and the general public plan their research.
Copies of the Nixon White House tapes will remain in College Park, Maryland, after the transfer of materials to Yorba Linda is complete. [See Also: Obtaining Nixon White House Tapes]
