Exploring Earth: What Happens When an Oil Spill Occurs?
A Web-based investigation that uses animations, interactive graphics, and unique imagery to help students gather information about oil spills. Students examine a sequence of Web pages on which they manipulate graphics or interpret image data.
The activities include:
- using OR&R's GNOME oil trajectory software to predict how spilled oil behaves under different environmental conditions.
- examining Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps to consider the environmental impacts of a spill.
- "seeing" what spill responders might see from an oil spill overflight.
This presentation was designed to accompany Earth Science, a high school textbook authored by Spaulding and Namowitz and published by McDougal Littell. The Exploring Earth site was developed by TERC, a non-profit educational research and development firm, in collaboration with McDougal Littell. Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation.
