Global Collaborations in Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities

Inputs: Partners

Partnerships

Partnerships are integral to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) programs for Global Collaborations and for the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Industry Sector. Input from customers and stakeholder groups, who have inherent knowledge and concern about the safety and health of workers in the sector, helps in setting research priorities. Collaborative research with our partners may include in-kind contributions that help to leverage NIOSH research dollars. Partners also add expertise or specialized experience to the research team, which benefits the research, analysis, interpretation, and communication of the results.

For information about partnering with Global Collaborations in the Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities sector, contact the Program Coordinator for the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Program or the Global Collaborations Program. The National Academies – Workshop on Road Safety in Developing Countries: Opportunities for U.S. Cooperation and Engagement

Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries: Opportunities for U.S. Cooperation and Engagement . The report summarizes presentations and discussions at a workshop held on January 26-27, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The workshop focused on the sharp increases in road traffic-related deaths and injuries in developing countries with a goal of providing a view of the diversity of U.S. interests, the scope of activities of U.S. agencies addressing this problem, and prospects for further U.S. engagement. The workshop discussions were intended to help the responsible government agencies gauge whether the U.S. response is proportional to the interests at stake and to identify next steps toward a more effective response. NIOSH was among the Federal agencies participating in key informant interviews that provided background for the Special Report, and was represented at the January 2006 workshop.

USAID Workshop – Business as a Partner in Improving Global Road Safety

On May 16, 2006, NIOSH scientists with lead roles in traffic injury prevention and global collaborations participated in a meeting of international development and civic leaders entitled “Business as a Partner in Improving Global Road Safety.” The purpose of the meeting was to explore practical ways that the private sector can work with government and other stakeholders to support growing efforts to improve global road safety, especially in developing countries.

The event was hosted by USAID’s Global Development Alliance, with input from the Global Road Safety Partnership and in cooperation with the International Business Leaders Forum, the Conference Board, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative (CSRI) of Harvard University. Keynote speakers were Anthony Bliss of the World Bank, David Silcock of the Global Road Safety Partnership, and Mark Rosenberg of the Task Force for Child Survival and Development. A related CSRI report, The Global Road Safety Partnership and Lessons in Multisectoral Collaboration, examines the relevance of road safety to economic growth and public health in developing countries.
