Responsibilities of the Inspector General
The goals of the Office of the Inspector General are:
- to improve the economy, effectiveness, and efficiency of NARA operations
- to detect and prevent waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement
The OIG's legislated responsibilities are to:
- conduct audits and investigations relating to all aspects of the agency's programs and operations
- coordinate or recommend policies for agency activities and for relationships between NARA and other federal agencies to promote efficiency and prevent waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement
- review proposed or existing legislation affecting the agency for impact on the economy and efficiency of operations
- keep the Archivist and the Congress fully informed of fraud, serious problems, abuses and deficiencies, recommend corrective action and report progress in implementing corrective action
- report violations of federal criminal law to the appropriate personnel at the Department of Justice
In carrying out our responsibilities, we will put into practice the Inspector General Statement of Reinvention Principles to:
- work with the agency head and the Congress to improve program management
- maximize the positive impact and ensure the independence and objectivity of our audits, investigations and other reviews
- use our investigations and other reviews to increase government integrity and recommend improved systems to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse
- be innovative, question existing procedures, and suggest improvements
- build relationships with program managers based on a shared commitment to improving program operations and effectiveness
- strive to continually improve the quality and usefulness of our products and services
