Trail Maintenance/Construction: Take pride and honor in helping to maintain your valuable forest trail system. The Adopt-A-Trail program is calling for your help. Volunteer individuals, families or groups can adopt a trail or section of trail and be responsible for the maintenance and cleanup of that particular trail. There are many, many trails available with a broad array of quality experience opportunities. Trails will be matched to adoptor's desires, experience and abilities. The Forest Service will provide training and direction as needed, and recognition for adopting the trail. The adoptor is rewarded with the feeling of having a good time, doing a good job, for a good cause. Make a difference!

This volunteer position serves as an aid to the professional Cultural Archeologist and provides knowledge and advice in the inventory, evaluation, protection, and management of prehistoric and historic resources. The public lands managed by the Sawtooth National Forest contain significant prehistoric and historic resources; including numerous cultural sites of national significance, several traditional cultural properties, historic trails and a multitude of historic sites. Inherent in this volunteer position is a working knowledge and experience of prehistoric and historic resources in order to inventory, document, and evaluate these resources. Daily stipends and housing are available. This position is open every year, May 1 - October 1.

FS Boise Basin Interpretive Assn (BBIA) Host

Position Description
Boise Basin Interpretive Association (BBIA) Visitor Center Host: We are seeking a volunteers to help out at the Interpretive Center in the Historical mining town of Idaho City. This position could be either during the summer’s months or all year long or split into 2 positions of one in the summer and one in the winter. RV hookups are available

Idaho City is about 36 miles from Idaho's state capital city of Boise. It is a beautiful drive up the canyon into the mountain town. The town is historical and gets many visitors for both the history and for the varied recreational opportunities.

The summer months have visitors looking for campgrounds, fishing, horseback riding, hiking and ATV/motorcycle riding. The winter months have visitors getting firewood, hunting, and snowmobile activities.

The visitor center duties would include receptionist duties at the visitor center, answering phones, meeting the public, providing information, selling specialty items such as Smokey bear items, and keeping records of sales. The Host volunteer would be also a source of information for the community, history, recreational opportunities etc. It could also include guiding interpretive walks in the community for visitors. The Forest Service is in partnership with the BBIA and could provide a trailer pad and space for the volunteer host at the local the FS compound.

This is an excellent chance for someone to come spend some time in historic Idaho City. There are many recreational activities available in the area and spectacular country to see. The volunteer could spend their days off recreating is a beautiful and diverse place.

FS Campground Host

Position Description
Campground Host: Cascade Springs is located 7.5 miles from the Alpine Scenic Loop. This beautiful site consists of springs cascading down the mountain slope in a series of limestone terraces and pools. The nearest town is Midway, Utah, 7 miles from Heber City.

Volunteer duties would include assisting visitors with information, provide a presence to prevent vandalism, and help Forest Service personnel maintain facilities.

Volunteer must have his or her own vehicle and trailer. Large 30-foot fifth wheel trailer is not recommended due to steep road into the site. Host unit has a concrete pad, table, and beautiful view of the springs. Water and sewer holding tank are available. No electricity or telephone is available, but cell phone or Forest Service radio can be obtained.

Negotiations for volunteer compensation may include propane, mileage, and daily subsistence.

FS Campground Host
Boise National Forest (Mountain Home, ID)

Position Description
Campground Host: Middle Fork Boise River campgrounds are located 31 miles from Boise; 11 miles of travel are over a narrow gravel road, of which travels along the edge of Arrowrock Reservoir. The road is designed for 2-way travel. The nearest store and gasoline service are located in Boise. The campground host is asked to assist with care and maintenance of 5 campgrounds (22 total units), and monitoring of three rental cabins located within the Cottonwood Ranger Station. The campground host is also asked to assist with monitoring rental cabin use and to perform any light clean-up and maintenance as needed. An important function of the Host is to provide information and assistance to campground and cabin visitors. District personnel will handle routine law enforcement, and cabin rental fees are collected through the National Reservation system. The host is provided with a radio to maintain contact with the District personnel.

The Lucky Peak Heli-base and Lucky Peak Nursery are located approximately 16 miles from the Cottonwood Ranger Station. A County Sheriff is located in Idaho City. Forest Service Law Enforcement is also staffed in Boise. After hour’s emergency support is provided through radio assistance from staffed lookouts, District Law Enforcement or Boise County Sheriff. Cellular phone service is spotty within the area. The best known area for using a cell phone is near the Lucky Peak Heli-base.

The host will be stationed at the Cottonwood Ranger Station. The Forest Service will provide: Propane, sewer, water and RV parking, electricity is provided by generator and is limited to a few hours each day. Subsistence and mileage reimbursement are available. Volunteer is asked to furnish own self-contained trailer.

Weekends receive peak use in the campgrounds and cabins. Schedules are designed to ensure assistance to Forest Visitors during peak use; an average week will be 4-5 days. The scheduled beginning date for the Host is May 15. The average closure date for the campgrounds is October 1.

The Salt Range looms to the west, the Wyoming Range, across the road, climbs up to the east. Campground vegetation is primarily conifers. The road is unpaved dirt, but well-maintained.

Public contact and the care of the campsites, toilets, and trailhead area are expected. Special maintenance projects may also be assigned. Backup support is provided by the maintenance crew and fire prevention officer. With 12 sites, this campground is generally quiet. It has water. Sewer and electricity are not available.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

Subsistence may be provided. Volunteers furnish own trailer.

Campground Host: Forest Park Campground (7000 feet) is located 34 miles from Alpine on the Greys River Road, across from a winter feedground for elk. The Salt Range looms to the west past the river, the Wyoming Range climbs up to the east behind the campground. Vegetation is primarily lodgepole pine, and sagebrush on the benches. The road is unpaved dirt, but well-maintained up to this point. From here the river climbs south to its headwaters, and the road narrows, allowing for a more primitive experience. Public contact and the care of the campsites, toilets, and trailhead area are expected.

Special maintenance projects may also be assigned. Backup support is provided by the maintenance crew and fire prevention officer. With 13 sites, this campground is fairly quiet. It has water. Sewer and electricity are not available. Subsistence may be provided. Volunteers furnish own trailer.

With 11 sites, this campground generally stays fairly busy. It has water hookup. Sewer and electricity are not available on-site, but a free dump station is located in Afton. Subsistence may be provided. Volunteers furnish own trailer.

Campground Host: Shafer Butte Campground is located 20 miles north of Boise, near the Bogus Basin Ski area. Elevation is 6,800 feet. The area offers a more remote location for the adventurous volunteer.

The Host responsibilities include general clean up and minor maintenance of 14 camping units; 2-days use group areas and assistance with posting of reservations and collection of visitor statistics. Electricity is not available. Propane, sewer, water, radio, tools and supplies are provided. Subsistence is provided. Volunteer furnishes own self contained trailer. Trailer space is limited to a 20 foot RV.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

Position Description
Campground Host: Trinity Mountain Campgrounds are located 80 miles from Mountain Home and are 8,500 feet in elevation. Each campground offers a cirque lake with steep, rugged granite headwalls. Vegetation is a combination of wildflowers and grass scattered among dense stands of lodgepole pine. Rainbow and cutthroat trout can be found in each lake. A variety of wildlife species can be found, such as black bear, mule deer, elk, and blue grouse. And for the avid birdwatcher, the area hosts a large variety of birds.

Volunteer will work 4-5 days a week. Forest Service will provide rustic one-room cabin for lodging. Job will include general cleanup, minor maintenance of facilities in 3 campground areas (33 total units) and one day-use area, monitoring of one rental cabin, along with providing information and assistance to campground visitors.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

The roads system is improved paved road up to the campground entrance. The Campground Host is responsible for providing visitor information, care and maintenance of 13 units, cleaning of 2 restrooms, and assistance with posting of reservations, and collection of visitor statistics.

Position Description
Campground Host: Sacajawea Campground is located in the Wyoming Range, 25 miles west of Big Piney. Access to campground is by 11 miles of paved road and then 14 miles of gravel road. The campground has 24 sites and is at 8,400 feet elevation. Middle Piney Lake is located 2 miles west on a gravel road. Volunteer to provide own self-contained camper trailer. Water and sewage hookup available.

Position Description
Campground Host: Host needed at Manns Creek Campground. Self-contained RV or trailer required. Free campsite will be provided with water available to fill tank and electric hook-ups. Tools and supplies will be furnished by the Forest Service.

Manns Creek is located 15 miles north of Weiser, Idaho off of US Highway 95 The campground is located adjacent to Manns Creek Reservoir, and has level parking pads. The nearby reservoir provides an opportunity for fishing, and a short drive will take you to many scenic vistas.

Duties of the host will include providing visitor information, campground cleanup, landscaping and general maintenance. A subsistence allowance will be available.
