Aphasia is a disorder resulting from brain damage that causes communication impairments ranging from mild word-finding difficulty to complete inability to speak, understand, read, or write, while intellectual abilities in other areas are relatively unaffected.

Current research shows that individuals with chronic aphasia can make significant gains in communication ability with behavioral speech-language therapy, and that gains are greater when therapy is provided on a more intensive schedule.

In order to make our practice consistent with this evidence, VAPHS has developed an intensive outpatient residential aphasia therapy program for veterans.

The program will last 3 weeks, 6 days per week, with 6 hours of language therapy and related activities provided per day. Detailed language testing will be conducted at the beginning and end of each program session.

The language therapy provided will be individually tailored to each participant, and will include 1-on-1 therapy with speech pathologists, group therapy, and computer activities. Veterans who complete the program will be given a home-therapy program to help them continue their progress.

Additionally, spouses and significant others will have the opportunity to participate in educational and counseling aspects of the program to enhance therapeutic gains and maximize functional outcomes.

Participants will reside in residential villas located on the VAPHS H.J. Heinz Campus for the duration of the program. Meals and access to laundry facilities will be provided.
