About this Course Module
Exposure to traumatic stressors is historic and commonly-experienced
in our military populations. This course presents many of the signs and
symptoms of PTSD and presents 3 models for understanding post-traumatic
stress reactions. Others topics include: an overview of the current
state of research and knowledge of PTSD in older populations, an
examination of the relationship between PTSD and the elderly (e.g.
cognitive, emotional, and physical correlates), and current treatment
implications and recommendations.
Goal: This course provides a background for
understanding for PTSD and aging. It provides an overview of rates of
PTSD and current state of research and knowledge in the aging veteran
population, developmental stressors due to aging and a review of action
steps that may be implanted to help minimize problems associated with
PTSD and aging.
Objectives: After viewing the presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Predict the possible different courses of PTSD that may occur as a veteran ages
- Relate developmental stressors due to aging that may impact PTSD
- Implement action steps to avoid or minimize problems associated with PTSD and aging
