Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Techniques for the Primary Care Clinician: Focusing on OIF/OEF Returnees

Gregory A. Leskin, Ph.D.
National Center for PTSD

About this Course Module

This presentation provides an overview for the rationale to integrate mental health services, including those for PTSD, into medical and primary care settings. The basis of this approach is clinical research suggesting that large numbers of patients will seek services via medical settings, rather than traditional mental health clinics. An integrated model of care, based on a population-based approach where mental health staff provide clinical treatment interventions in the primary care setting, is presented.

Goal: This course provides a solid rationale and background for routine screening and treatment of PTSD among veterans presenting in primary care settings.

Objectives: After viewing the presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Screen patients for posttraumatic stress disorder in primary care settings, including use screening tools and make referrals for mental health interventions
  2. Employ an integrated model of care including that which co-locates mental health staff into the primary care setting
