FOREST SERVICE TO IMPLEMENT PARKING RESTRICTIONS ON CEDAR MOUNTAIN

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Effective July 1, the Dixie National Forest will implement restrictions on parking in Forest Service lots on Cedar Mountain.

Vehicles will be limited to a stay of no more than nine contiguous days in parking areas along major roads on National Forest System lands. Parking or staging construction-related equipment and supplies in those parking areas will be prohibited.

The Dixie National Forest will also work with local government agencies to relocate solid waste receptacles and other visually obtrusive equipment and material away from the view shed along main travel routes.

“Long-term storage or construction staging are not appropriate uses of either National Forest System Lands or the National Scenic Byway,” said Dayle Flanigan, district ranger for the Cedar City Ranger District. “We want to make the Markagunt Plateau a more beautiful and visually appealing destination, and preserve short-term parking for the recreating public.”

Over the past year, the Dixie National Forest has implemented a number of measures to better manage Cedar Mountain’s scenic resources. The forest has discontinued issuing vendor permits along the scenic corridors, and has been working with utility companies to make new facilities visually appropriate.

The forest has also implemented travel management measures to reduce the number of user-created trails, and is developing a comprehensive motorized travel plan to reduce the impact of OHV use on forest resources, including scenery.

Dixie National Forest Supervisor Bob Russell will issue a closure order to direct the management of Forest Service parking lots on Cedar Mountain. Violators of that order are subject to citation.

For more information, please contact Kent Traveller, Cedar City Ranger District recreation and lands specialist, at (435) 865-3241.
