July's Tip
Lightning
Safety
Summer in the Rocky Mountains is an electric time of year! Lightning
is a very serious threat to people visiting the mountains year-round,
but especially in the summer months. Often hikers and visitors start
their visit on a beautiful clear day only to find themselves caught
in a severe thunderstorm. Here are a few tips to help you if you
get caught in an unexpected thunderstorm:
- Move to a building or into a metal vehicle
- Avoid water, wide open spaces, high ridges and single trees
- Try to get to low ground or a sheltered area including a cave,
ditch, tunnel, canyon or clumps of trees
- Make yourself as small as possible by crouching low to the
ground
- Avoid using telephones or radios
We hope you have an enjoyable and safe visit to your national forests.
