Fire

Photo of an air tanker dropping fire retardant on a fire.Fire management combines elements of fire prevention, fire suppression and fire use.

Wildland fire is inevitable in North American ecosystems. Most wildland fire must be suppressed to meet resource and social objectives. Wise use of fire approximates the historical role of fire and enhances long-term wildland values.

Effectively managing forest fuels and dealing with wildfires requires coordination in northern Colorado among the US Forest Service, the Colorado State Forest Service, local counties, Jeffco Tanker Base, the Fort Collins Interagency Dispatch and Aviation Center and local communities.

Current Wildland Fires

Links to information about large wildland fires on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland will be posted here. Recorded information about wildfires can be obtained by calling 970-498-1030 or 1031.

Fuels Management

To protect homes, and improve the health of the forest and wildlife habitat, we use several methods to reduce forest vegetation (fuels), where the forest may be subject to an intense, destructive wildland fire. These include both mechanical hazardous fuels treatment projects and prescribed fire. To find out about on-going prescribed fires or the burning of piles of thinning debris on the ARP please call our recorded information lines at 970-498-1030/1031.

One major effort is the Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership (FRFTP) taking place from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. There are multiple projects, including those within the FRFTP, taking place on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland (ARP).

National Fire Plan

The region has expanded fire assessment, suppression and prevention programs to carry out the National Fire Plan.

Fire Prevention

Fire prevention includes wildfire prevention, trip planning, tips for protection your home from wildfire and Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

Find information on the Firewise program and cooperative efforts though the Colorado State Forest Service.
