Cheryl McQueary

Cheryl McQueary was appointed Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) on March 2, 2008 by President George W. Bush.

Deputy Administrator McQueary serves as RITA’s chief operating officer, responsible for the day-to-day management, including coordinating and reviewing DOT’s roughly $1 billion investment in research, development and technology, and with advancing technologies that will improve the nation’s transportation system. RITA oversees the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Volpe Center, the Intelligent Transportation Systems program, the Transportation Safety Institute, and numerous cross-modal research initiatives.

Prior to coming to RITA, Ms. McQueary served as Assistant Chief Information Officer for Transformation Programs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where she and her team were implementing the largest single messaging and collaboration system at USDA. She has also worked a number of management and policy-related issues including organizational analysis and design, leadership and green technology initiatives.

Ms. McQueary has extensive private sector management experience and has served in a number of technical roles at Bell Laboratories, AT&T and Lucent Technologies. She brings to RITA extensive experience in project management, operations, business development, and design engineering.

She has provided years of philanthropic and community service, including as Vice President of the Regional Health Planning Council of Newark, New Jersey, and appointed Chair of Plan Development and Implementation Committee by former New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean’s Statewide Health Coordinating Council.

A native of California, Ms. McQueary is a graduate of Drew University where she earned a BA degree in Zoology; a MPA from Fairleigh Dickenson; and a member of Beta Beta Beta Academic Honor Society.
