Landscape Ecology, GIS and Remote Sensing

In support of sustainable ecosystem management, the landscape ecology and remote sensing program at IITF focuses on using geomatics to further our understanding of the interactions between tropical forest landscapes and society. Example projects:

Major participation in the Caribbean Mapping Initiative, in cooperation with, The Nature Conservancy’s International Headquarters (TNC), the US Geological Survey’s EROS Data Center and NASA’s Global Observation of Forest Cover (GOFC) Program. This program seeks to map land use and natural vegetation across the Caribbean in support of ecosystem management and conservation.

Understanding the patterns of land-use and natural vegetation change following dramatic changes in Puerto Rico's economic infrastructure over the past half-century.

Integration of the influences of environmental gradients, landscape structure, and land-use history to model tree species diversity, composition, and biomass using inventory data of Puerto Rico’s secondary forests.

Mapping urban forests and historical urban forest changes in the San Juan metropolitan area.

Mapping ownership boundaries in Puerto Rico’s karst region.
