Horse-Friendly Campgrounds on Columbine Public Lands

Lower Hermosa Campground

The Lower Hermosa campground is located 14 miles northwest of Durango. Take Hwy. 550 north from Durango. Turn west at Hermosa and take Forest Rd. 576 to the campground.

This small campground has 20 campsites; some are
for horse use only. Tables and fire grates are at each site. A toilet is in the parking lot adjacent to the Hermosa Creek Trailhead. The parking lot is large enough for vehicles and horse trailers.

The Hermosa Creek Trail begins at the parking lot and follows the creek some 25 miles uphill through the Hermosa Roadless Area to Hermosa Park, near Sig Creek Campground. The Hermosa Trail is singletrack with some steep dropoffs. It is open to motorized use. This multiple-use trail is very popular for mountain bikers, horseback riders, hikers, fishermen, and dirt bike /ATV riders.
