• When is National History Day?

National Contest

National History Day's core program is a national contest for students in grades 6-12. The students conduct extensive research related to an annual theme and present their findings in one of four categories: exhibits, documentaries, performances or papers. Students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while creating their entries.

There are two divisions: junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12). Students can choose to participate in the contest individually, or as part of a group of up to five students. Public, private and home schools are welcome to participate. The competition starts at a local or district level and progresses to state and national competitions.

At the national contest participants have the opportunity to win national awards of up to $5,000 and university scholarships.

Students who want to participate should talk with their teacher. To enter the competition contact your state coordinator for the dates and registration information for your local contest.

Summer Institute

The NHD summer teacher institute exposes participants to the latest in historical scholarship, familiarizing them with the primary sources available for studying and teaching and modeling different ways to encourage active learning. Teachers will have the opportunity to work with prominent historians and learn from peers in a "best practices" session. Apply and learn more about the summer institute.

Professional Development

NHD offers a variety of professional development programs that can be customized to your state standards and assessment models to improve student achivement.

These training opportunities are designed to support new or experienced teachers in all aspects of historical content, organization, and methodology.

For school administrators, workshops can address critical issues faced in introducing, developing, and supporting a National History Day program and improving student achivement.
