National Archives Diversity/Affirmative Employment (AEP) Program

Diversity Policy Statement

As Archivist of the United States, I strongly support full and meaningful implementation of Equal Employment Opportunity policies and objectives that will enhance the quality of our work life and the productivity of our workforce. My personal commitment to these goals goes well beyond meeting legal requirements and directives of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. I am convinced that the personal uniqueness of each employee is an asset of incalculable worth and am dedicated to creating an environment within NARA which is free of discrimination and where all employees are afforded the opportunity to develop, perform and advance to their maximum potential without regard to race, national origin, color, sex, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.

I recognize that many of the EEO problems which confront organizations do not result from overt bigotry or prejudice. Instead, they result from an all-too-human tendency to surround ourselves with people who look, think, and act as we do. My challenge, a challenge I enlist you to join me in, is to change that. NARA must not only reflect and foster diversity, but it must promote the timely resolution of EEO complaints at the informal stage.

The success of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program depends considerably on the support and positive direction given by managers and supervisors. We all lead by example, and we must set the right kind of example in this critical area. I urge you to join me in an active commitment to the principles of equal opportunity in their fullest sense. With your support and participation, I know we can turn workforce diversity from a leadership challenge into one of our greatest strengths. In so doing, NARA will earn recognition as both a great place to work and a place that does great work.
